If technology were to be one factor, Prem perhaps walks the tallest in Bangalore. However, Prem is beyond mere technology. Yes, he is one of the guys who can give any data centre a complex. Yes, he might end up being Apple’s unofficial brand ambassador. Yes, he must have been the only one with a TV on his cell phone well before 3G came to India. Yeah, it was a Chinese make, and DD was the only channel you could watch! 

Tech trivia apart, Prem is sharp as they don’t come anymore, when it comes to his work. And he is a wonderful professional to work with. I have worked with Prem (while he wrongly claims that I make overwork), on many a project in the last few years. Never have I been disappointed with the output. Great work, and commitment and yes, great films apart, there are a few perks of working with Prem! 

If you happen to be working after sunset, drinks and copious amounts of moong dal (tastes well, different) on the house. Now, if you are stretching yourself while Prem is busy experimenting with and experiencing brilliance, free wi-fi ensures you are connected to the rest of the world. And that unmistakable lavish dinner (fried rice, cucumber salad, raw onions, you name it)! 

If you have a stiff deadline to meet, and expectedly if you happen to be spending the night there, expect a free ride back home or some delectable breakfast at joints strangely only Prem knows about. All these, while you perhaps will be reviewing your film on his iPad that’s connected through his iPhone. 

For a man who is one of the best in India, be it technology, technique, patience and talent, here’s the best part- any compliment on the wonderful effort (at least this is what I have experienced) always has a standard reply– “Boss.. woh sab theek hai … client ko bolo to send me to Bombay yaaar!” Prem.. In short, he is incorrigible and irreplaceable.

On both days of the Cecilian concert on Saturday and Sunday, we stood at the entrance as the shows began.

I guess there were a few side glances towards the Jeevarathni counter and a slight smile and a nod as we handed out our Jeevarathni bookmarks.

Jeevarathni for them was just a name or a tag.

After all the audience had come to see and hear the Cecilian choir.

But once the Jeevarathni video clip was played after the interval, all of a sudden, it was no longer a concert in aid of Jeevarathni.

Jeevarathni became a reality to all of them, the response was tremendous.

As they trooped out at the end of the show, there were smiles all around and a loving and genuine acknowledgement of the concept of Jeevarathni and the lives that have been enriched both that of our children and all of us who have come in contact with them directly or indirectly.

Prem Chawla and Video Post were among my first collaborators when I came to Bangalore in the late 1980s. Together, we worked on a range of productions that crosscut corporate video films and audio visuals, social documentaries, theatre productions and a few commercials.

Some of the work included a corporate film on Karnataka Welding Products (1986) , audio visual on Karnataka Tourism (KSTDC, 1987),  a commercial on Mascot bread (1986) a docu drama on nuclear disarmament ( St Johns, 1987),  video documentation work on media education for Media Centre ( 1989-90) and quite a few corporate and social documentary voice-overs.

“We have been working with Video Post since 2005 when we did the entire post production of our documentary ‘Living with Giants’ when they were based at Lavelle Road.  That was a 50-minute production which was ultimately sold and broadcast on Discovery Channel.   All graphics, overlaying of music, commentary and ambient sound were done at the studio – on schedule and without any hitch.

It’s been a decade now and we’ve never looked at another Studio.   Never needed to and never wanted to.   We moved to their new studio at Domlur when they did.  

Prem Chawla is a bundle of energy and exciting ideas and can put a smile on your face at the end of the hardest day.   He is one of those rare people whose enthusiasm is infectious.   A total Apple gizmo aficionado, there is nothing that Prem cannot solve.   And he has the perfect partner in Karin who manages the schedules and the accounts.   The postproduction staff we have worked with are very competent, extremely helpful and willing to go that extra mile to meet a deadline.   One must not forget ‘Sox’ getting a little grey but fiercely guarding his territory.
